HOW DO YOU LOOK IN GOLD? A gold vest, that is. As in every major Rotary International event, a volunteer staff of Sergeants-at-Arms will be on hand to help answer questions and guide you to your next destination. If you are interested in stepping up and serving as an official SAA at the Boise Zone Institute, we have need for a few smiling faces, particularly for the All-Club Luncheon and the Reunion Dinner, both on Friday. Contact Dick Jones, rjones9755@aol.com, or Carl Prinzing, carlprinzing@gmail.com.
DO YOU LOVE TO SING? Join The Zone Tones with other Rotarians and guests as they add their voices during the Institute’s opening dinner on Thursday and during the Inspirational Service on Sunday. If you’d like to participate please contact Rhonda Herrington, Rhonda.herrington@yahoo.com, to let her know that you cannot wait to sing! She will send you music and vocal samples so you will have plenty of time to rehearse your part.
We will be painting bowls at Ceramic on Wednesday, September 26th at 6pm to be donated to the Idaho Foodbank's event, Empty Bowls. Please bring snacks and beverages if you want.
World Polio Day was established by Rotary International over a decade ago to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, who led the first team to develop a vaccine against poliomyelitis. Use of this inactivated poliovirus vaccine and subsequent widespread use of the oral poliovirus, developed by Albert Sabin, led to the establishment of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in 1988. As of 2013, GPEI had reduced polio worldwide by 99%.
Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease. There is no cure, but there are safe and effective vaccines. Polio can be prevented through immunization. Polio vaccine, given multiple times, almost always protects a child for life. The strategy to eradicate polio is therefore based on preventing infection by immunizing every child until transmission stops and the world is polio-free.
You can help by purchasing a pair of limited edition high tops to support the cause made by the District 5400 Public Image Chair. With your $50 purchase and matching 2:1 donation form the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a total of $86.79 goes to the PolioPlus Fund to continue to #stompoutpolio!!
The Annual District Celebration is having a change in venue this year! Please get the dates on your calendar to celebrate with our District Governor, Jennifer Deroin, in Boise on May 17 & 18, 2019. More information to come!
The newsletter will not be sent out for the next week. Please feel free to e-mail me with items that you would like included upon its return on September 20th!
Family Advocates works to strengthen families and keep kids safe by empowering everyday people to protect and enrich the lives of youth. We are a private, independent 501 (c)(3) non-profit agency founded in 1978 and serving Southwest Idaho. Our founders, two foster parents—Mr. and Mrs. Glen Hogin and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Murphy—saw the need for advocacy for children and established a long-term vision of seeing the end of child abuse in Idaho. Family Advocates was incorporated in Boise on September 28, 1978.
The CASA program began late in 1980, when the Junior League, the Boise Bar Association, and Family Advocates received permission from the Honorable Richard Grant, Juvenile Magistrate, to initiate a pilot Guardian ad Litem program in Ada County. In 1982, the CASA program officially accepted its first child protection referral and, in 1986, Family Advocates, including attorney Eric Haff, took an active role in working with legislators to revise the Child Protection Act to clearly define the role of a Guardian ad Litem (GAL). The CASA program at Family Advocates serves children in the Fourth Judicial District (Ada, Boise, Elmore, and Valley Counties).
Keeping families healthy and stable was the foundation of the Family Advocates vision. The program has evolved to include best practices and theories of modern day and has expanded out from Boise to several rural locations. In 1978, Family Advocates began working alongside families through a Home Visiting program and continues to provides systems of support.
